GTIN Exemption Application Process for Amazon

Updated today

Amazon requires a valid product ID (such as UPC, GTIN, EAN, or ISBN) in order to list items. If you do not have these barcodes, you may apply for a GTIN exemption, provided that you meet certain eligibility requirements.

You may qualify for a GTIN exemption if your products fall under any of the following categories:

  • Private-label or handmade products

  • Products you manufacture, brand, or publish that do not have barcodes

  • Parts that do not have a product ID (e.g., automotive parts or mobile accessories)

  • Bundled products (e.g., a belt and wallet set)

  • Generic or unbranded products

If your products meet any of the criteria above, you can proceed with applying for a GTIN exemption.

How to apply for GTIN Exemption:

Step 1: Log in to your Amazon Seller Central

Go to Catalog and select Add products. Enter your product title into the search bar and submit it. Click "Create a new listing."

Step 2: Select the product type/category

Fill in product details and select the appropriate product type/category.

Step 3: Input Brand Name

If you have a registered brand name, you may enter it accordingly. If not, you can select “This product does not have a brand name,” which will automatically set the brand to “Generic.”

After that, select “This product does not have a Product ID,” then click Next to proceed with the GTIN exemption application.

You will receive an auto-approval for GTIN exemption.

Timeline: Automatic Approval. Post approval wait 30 minutes to list product, if you do not wait you may see a product ID error while exemptions are being processed with all our systems.
